ABABJ editor takes silver in international competition

“Misplaced Angst,” a 2013 ABA Banking Journal editorial concerning the two sides of deposit advance products, received the 2014 “Tabbie” silver award for excellence in a magazine Editor’s Column. Editor & Publisher William Streeter wrote the prize-winning column.

Tabbies are awarded by Trade Association Business Publications International. The organization dedicates itself to excellence in English-language business publications wherever in the world they appear. This year’s competition included hundreds of entries from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Africa.

Streeter has edited, written, and reported for ABA Banking Journal for nearly 37 years. He was named Editor-in-Chief in 1985 and became Editor & Publisher in 2012. His columns have received regional and national “Azbee” awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors.

In 2004 Streeter, as part of a four-person team, was a Finalist in the Jesse H. Neal Journalism Award for Best Single Article. The Neal Awards are regarded as the “Pulitzer Prize” of business journalism.

“Misplaced Angst” discussed the controversial deposit advance product as well as overdraft protection. In the latter part of the column Streeter presented four suggestions, including this one:

“So ask yourself in regard to any product, 1. “Are we adopting it because it meets a legitimate need?’ and 2. ‘Is the product and how we offer it in the best interests of the customer?’ ”

In a public comment on Streeter’s editorial, TABPI’s judge wrote: “Crisp, clean, and thought-provoking writing, topped off with concrete suggestions to the industry. Well done!”
