CME Group has increased its share of the XRP futures market as outstanding positions grew on the regulated US exchange while declining elsewhere.
The amount of XRP represented by futures contracts on CME rose by approximately 36% between August 17 and August 31, increasing from around 284 million XRP to 387 million XRP, according to CoinGlass and Commodity Futures Trading Commission data.
This lifted CME’s share of outstanding XRP futures positions from approximately 10% to 17%.
The increase contrasted with the wider market. The total amount of XRP represented by outstanding futures contracts fell by 16%, from 2.77 billion tokens to 2.34 billion. Positions outside CME declined by approximately 533 million XRP, or 21%.
These changes occurred as XRP’s price climbed nearly 40%, rising from around $0.99 to $1.38. This suggests traders were generally reducing their use of leveraged futures positions during the rally, while CME continued to attract additional activity.
CME provides a CFTC-regulated and centrally cleared market frequently used by professional trading firms and investment managers. Its growing share therefore suggests greater demand for XRP exposure through regulated US infrastructure, although not everyone trading through CME is an institutional investor.
Separate CFTC data through August 25 showed leveraged investment funds holding 3,206 contracts positioned for a price decline, compared with 892 positioned for an increase. Their overall position was equivalent to approximately 116 million XRP and was more than double the previous week’s level.
This does not necessarily mean these investors expected XRP’s price to fall, as futures can be used to protect cryptocurrency holdings against losses. Dealers and asset managers moved in the opposite direction, increasing their net positions favoring a price rise by the equivalent of approximately 60 million and 28 million XRP, respectively.
