Government Unveils $90bn in AI and Energy Investments

More than $90 billion in energy and AI investments have been pledged in Pennsylvania by US President Donald Trump and executives from some of the nation's largest companies.

At the inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit at Carnegie Mellon University, leading technology and energy companies committed to investing in private companies across the state to build a new AI-driven economy that leverages Pennsylvania’s strengths in technology and energy.

The investments include plans to build energy-intensive data centers to support AI development as well as an energy innovation hub in the Pittsburgh area to equip local workers with skills for jobs in energy and AI.

For example, Google has signed a $3 billion agreement with Brookfield Asset Management to purchase electricity from two hydropower facilities in Pennsylvania. The company also plans to invest $25 billion in data centers across Pennsylvania and nearby states over the next two years.

Meanwhile, asset management firm Blackstone plans to invest $25 billion in data centers and energy infrastructure across Pennsylvania and has announced a new joint venture with PPL Corp focused on power generation.

In addition, FirstEnergy will invest $15 billion to upgrade power distribution, strengthen grid infrastructure and manage the upgraded grid across 56 counties in Pennsylvania.

Meta Platforms has also announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in building large-scale AI data centers, including a multi-gigawatt facility named Prometheus, which is set to be developed in Ohio.

Organizers of the summit said they hope these investments are just the beginning and will use the summit as a springboard to boost energy production, expand data center capacity and foster new AI startups. These efforts aim to position the Pittsburgh area as a national hub for AI.
